The Houston Caribbean Festival is an annual Caribbean Carnival that is all about celebrating music, food and different cultures! It is a community event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Houston Caribbean Festival is a multicultural event that is about embracing and celebrating the diverse cultures and lifestyles that are unique to the local community!
What is the history of the Houston Caribbean Carnival?
Carnival is an important part of Caribbean culture. Carnival depicts Caribbean cultural expressions as well as historical significance. Carnival was created to retain and promote the rich heritage and culture of the Caribbean Islands.
Pride and optimism are the hallmarks that drive Caribbean Carnival which is world renowned for its colourful, memorable and compelling mas parades filled with creative and talented masquerades and marching bands.
Houston Caribbean Festival is about encouraging cross-cultural programs within the community to expand Caribbean culture as well as educate the next generation of Caribbean youths in Caribbean arts, crafts and culture.
How do they celebrate the Houston Caribbean Festival?
The Houston Caribbean Festival kicks off with a Caribbean Mas Parade. The parade cultivates with a Caribbean festival which will be filled with the tastes, sights and sounds of the Caribbean. There will be lots of colorful costumes, dancing, music and so much more. The Caribbean Festival after the parade is a family-friend event which will have activities for the whole family.
What is playing mas?
When it comes to celebrating Caribbean Carnival you can either just be a spectator or you can join in the parades! When you want to join in it is called playing mas. For those not familiar with Caribbean Carnival, to play mas you have to join a masquerade band.
You cannot just show up in a beautiful home-made costume and join the parade. You must select a mas band that you want to be part of, contact them, purchase their costumes, or t-shirts and dance through the streets with your chosen band. Houston Carnival Mas Parade
Houston Carnival Mas Parade transforms Houston into a lively, colorful and chaotic Caribbean celebration. The parade will see a stream of Mas Bands accompanied by sound systems or music bands perform through the streets. You can expect to hear a lot of Caribbean tunes like reggae, soca or calypso music being played. And you will see lots of Steel pan bands performing.
But this is more than just a parade, this is also a competition and the mas bands are all being judged on their creativity, performance, energy, costume design, and participation of their masquerades. The event is free for all spectators.

How to get to Houston?
If you are coming from close by you are able to catch an Amtrak train or you can catch the Greyhound or Bolt Bus. If you are coming from further away you can fly to Houston which is served by two major commercial airports which are George Bush Intercontinental Airport and William P. Hobby Airport.
